National Championships-Men's Doubles
940-sets a piece from Dave English and Sean McDonnell saw the pair take the Men's Doubles gold at the National Championships on Sunday morning.
English almost made it the perfect session when he rolled eleven strikes in-a-row in game three, only to hit light on the head pin to leave the 2 and 8 pins standing for a 298 game.
A combined 470 in game one was the ideal platform for English and McDonnell to mount their challenge, although a 398 in game two did put a temporary dent in their attempts to claim gold.
However, McDonnell backed up English's 298 in game three with a 225 of his own before a classy performance in game four saw him shoot a vital 267. English finished off his set with a 227 to post a total of 941 for the four games. McDonnell's 944 saw the pair finish on a combined total of 1885 to seal the gold.
Elsewhere, a massive 989 from Alan Gibbons was only enough to see him and his teammate Graham Turner take the silver medal, witht the bronze going to the team of Stephen O'Connor and Paul Stott.
Gibbons and Turner had lead the event after two games, postin scores of 481 and 482. Despite remaining consistent in games three and four (posting scores of 450 and 436) they were ultimately unable to hold off the challenge of English and McDonnell.
However, Gibbons' 247.25 average for the four games did see him take the overall lead in the All Events. His total for the nine games so far is 2091, a 232.33 average overall. He leads Paul Stott by 35 pins in the standings, with triple-bronze medalist so far Stephen O'Connor siting in the familiar position of third, 23 pins further back from Stott.
Dave English's 941 in the doubles saw him jump from eleventh to fourth in the All Events standings. Alan Bride sits in fifth on a total of 1967, 124 pins of the lead. The top ten is completed by Fran Puzzoli, John Wilson, Darragh McLoughlin, Tom Byrne and Graham Turner.
The cut for the top ten, which will eventually be the number who make the All Events final, curently sits at 1926, a 214 average. The nearest contender for the top ten is Nickey O'Malley, 58 pins off the cut. Keith Monahan sits just one pin further back, with the gap then widening significantly to Simon English , who sits 13th on a 199.67 average, 129 pins of the top ten cut.
The championships continue on Friday February 25th at 7.30 pm with the trios event. The Five-man event, which is the final event before the All Events final, takes place on Saturday mornig at 9 am. Overall there are six games remaining for competitors to force their way into the ten-man All Events final.

National Championships Singles
Alan Bride and Ciara McDunphy took the gold in the men's and ladies singles at the National Championships in Leisureplex Stillorgan on Saturday morning.
Bride bowled a perfect 300 game in game four to take the lead in the men's section by 8 pins, after backing up a steady start with a 238 in game three.
A 229 in his final game was enough to see Bride win the gold medal, ahead of Paul Stott, by a margin of 13 pins. Ireland's World Cup representative in 2010 Stephen O'Connor took the bronze, finishing a further 31 pins back.
There were plenty of good starters in game one, the pick of them being Stott and Dave English, both shooting opening 238's. Other strong first games were John Wilson's 237 and Graham Turner's 233. In total 15 players bowled 200+ in game one.
Game two saw twelve 200+ games, the pick of them coming from Stephen O'Connor (268), Simon English (257) and Alan Gibbons (243). Dave English had his low game of the set with a 180, while other first game leader Paul Stott added a 205 to his opening 238. O'Connor's 502 for is opening two games saw him take over the lead of the event. Eventual winner Bride was. at this stage, just 14 over, and almost 90 pins down.
Game three saw Bride begin to build the momentum which would see him shoot 300 in game four, posting a 238. Stott pressed on again with a 258, while O'Connor's 259 meant he kept a firm hand on the lead. Fran Puzzoli was a big mover in game three, shooting a 269 after opening with a 187 and a 191. Defending National Champion Darragh McLoughlin rolled a 236 to counter a 188 in game two, and Karl Doherty pushed himself into the medal chase with a 268.
Game four was all about Bride's 300. All twelve balls found the pocket as Bride found a consistent shot on the outside. Despite the twelfth ball hitting a little light in the pocket the ball created enough pinfall to kick the seven pin out to signal the celebration from Bride. The perfect game was made all-the-sweeter with O'Connor shooting just 174. Bride had overtaken the 109 deficit to leader O'Connor in one game, and now led from Stott, with O'Connor sitting 17 pins off the lead. A 258 from Tom Byrne threw him into the mix for a medal going into game five, as did Fran Puzzoli's 222 and Alan Gibbons' 279.
The final game of the singles did not stir up too much in the way of excitement in terms of fighting for medals. Bride's 229 was enough to hold off the attempt from Stott and co to snatch away the gold. Stott finished 31 pins ahead of O'Connor to take the silver. Three consistently strong games from Puzzoli saw him take fourth spot, ahead of Tom Byrne in fifth, Alan Gibbons in sixth, John Wilson 7th, Darragh McLoughlin 8th, Simon English 9th and Graham Turner 10th.
In the ladies section, McDunphy was in control from the word go. She opened the event with a five-bagger and went on to post a 266. Her closest challenger after game one was Hannah Cullen on 210. Ros O'Reilly was the only other player to break the 200 mark, with defending National Champ Aimee Kellegher rolling a 196.
Game two saw a high-game of just 200, rolled by O'Reilly. Leader McDunphy rolled a 195, while Cullen fell back a little with a 180. Carol Catchpole backed up her opening 192 with a 198. Her consistency would see her eventually claim the silver medal.
Game three and the big game was Yvonne Randell's 220. A 195 from Catchpole kept her going along nicely, while McDunphy held on to her comfortable lead with a 207. Kellegher continued to struggle to put a score together, shooting a 184 in game three. Cullen and Caitriona Mulhall matched each other in game three with a pair of 194's.
A 227 in game four left little doubt that McDunphy would take the gold medal. All that was left was to decide who would take the other two. Catchpole converted her consistency into a scratch game of 200, while a pair of 176 games from Randell and Cullen, and Mulhall's 217, left them the other likely contenders for the remaining medal spots.
Game five saw Catchpole cement the silver medal with a 213. Randell got the better of the rest to take the bronze after rolling a 216. Cullen's 185 meant that she finished 40 pins further back in fourth, while Mulhall took fifth by finishing 35 pins behind her.
Congratulations to Alan Bride and Ciara McDunphy on their singles gold medals.
Doubles event reviews will be posted on Bowltalk soon.

National Championships Note
Just a note that I will be posting instant updates throughout Friday night's National Championship Mixed Doubles.
I won't be able to do instant updates for the men's events as I'll be playing, but I'll be trying to get updates posted immediately after the squads finish. I will also try to do instant updates for the women's squads if possible.
Keep up with all the goings on at this year's Nationals over the course of the two weekends of play at Bowltalk, the only place for instant (where possible) and immediate updates from the tournament.
Good luck to all those competing this year in the tournament in Leisureplex Stillorgan.

This weekend sees the start of this year's Irish National Championships in Leisureplex Stillorgan. Defending Champions Darragh McLoughlin and Aimee Kellegher will be looking to get a good start in the opening weekend events.
The tournament opens with the Mixed Doubles on Friday February 18th at 7.30. Although the Mixed Doubles does not go towards the All Events final, there is still the matter of gold, silver and bronze medals to be won.

On Sunday focus turns to the doubles event. Bowlers play four games for this event with individual pinfall going towards each competitors' All Events total. Play commences at 8.30 am for the men, with the ladies doubles taking place at 6 pm the same evening.
As always the tournament runs over two weekends, so bowlers get a five-day break to think over their progress so far.
The tournament starts up again with the trios event on Friday February 25th. The men's event begins at 7.30 pm, with the ladies' event starting at 9.30. Bowlers will bowl three games, and individual scores will again be added to each competitors All Events total.
Th final qualifying event for the All Events final, the three-game team event, is scheduled for Saturday morning at 9 am. Men's teams consist of five competitors, while the ladies' teams are made up of four players.
After the team event, competitors individual total scores are calculated, with the top ten men and top six ladies qualifying for the All Events finals. The men will play nine games and the ladies will play five, with pinfall carried forward, to determine who will be the Irish National Champions for 2011. The champions will represent Ireland in the European Champions Cup in Lahiti, Finland in August.

Weber Cup on Sky Sports
The Sky Sports viewing schedule for the 2010 Weber Cup has been announced.
The Weber Cup took place in the Barnsley Metrodome from Novermber 12th to 14th last year, with ten of the World's best bowlers competing in tenpin bowling's version fo the Ryder Cup.
Europe's four-man team took on the four-man outfit from the United States over the three days of competition in a combination of singles, doubles and team baker matches.
The tournament has previously been shown live on Sky Sports, but the decision was taken this year to not broadcast matches live. Instead each match was filmed and a viewing schedule put together in. Altogether the tournament will be shown in eighteen one-hour programmes.
The matches will be broadcast over the course of the next three months, one programme-a-week, with the first braodcast going out on February 9th. The first show will feature the first team baker match and the first singles match between European captain Osku Palermaa and Mr. 300 Tommy Jones.
The programmes will be broadcast on a variation of the Sky Sports channels. The first programme airs on Sky Sports 4 at 8 pm. Each programme will also be repeated either later the same evening or the next day.
